The default option for on-site domestic wastewater treatment has long been a septic tank followed by a drainage field (or “soakaway”), and in Scotland that remains SEPA’s preferred option – only if the ground’s porosity is inadequate will a discharge to surface waters be considered. In England and Wales, however, planning regulations stipulate that a packaged sewage treatment plant is to be preferred over a septic tank, regardless of whether it discharges to surface waters, e.g. a stream, or into the ground via a drainage field.

We design, supply, install and maintain septic tanks and sewage treatment plants, cesspits where neither of the above solutions are possible (except in Scotland, where they are not permitted), and of course packaged pump stations where the main sewer – the universal first choice in all situations – is some way away.

Commercial Sewage Treatment Plants

Commercial sewage treatment plants treat wastewater to a standard suitable for discharge to a flowing watercourse (subject to volume and quality considerations, and any required permissions from SEPA in Scotland, Natural Resources Wales in Wales and the Environment Agency in England).

WPL - HIPAF

The WPL HiPAF (High-Performance Aerated Filter) sewage treatment plants are renowned for their
consistently high-quality treated effluent which makes them ideal for discharges to sensitive
receptors.

Solutions are available in 3 different formats:

  • The Compact plant, for 1-60 PE where installation space is limited – above-ground installation options are available
  • The Midi plant, for 60-250 PE, in a single unit (pictured)
  • The Modular Plant, for 250-3000 PE, in a modular format

At Hutchinson, we design, supply, install, and maintain HiPAF plant schemes of all sizes. We also offer project management services to support new installations.

KEE NU Disc RBC

KEE Process has over five decades of expertise in off-mains wastewater treatment.

– in fact, they grew from the original Klargester company when it was taken over by Irish multinational building products supplier Kingspan. Kee has retained its focus and continued to develop and deliver robust, reliable, and very effective solutions. Kee’s RBC (rotating biological contactor) sewage treatment plants – both the NuDisc and the DC/DN range – are tried and tested.

Pumping Stations for Commercial Use

Pump stations are used to move raw sewage, treated effluent, and occasionally surface water from
one place to another where gravity flow is not possible. A pump station can also be used to pump treated effluent from a septic tank to a remote drainage field or from a
package sewage treatment plant to a remote discharge point on a stream or river. When specifying a pump station, it’s essential to prioritize reliability as the key feature to look for.

We work with the two, industry-leading suppliers, Xylem with both their Flygt and Lowara brands and TT Pumps.

Septic Tank for Commercial Use

In commercial settings, septic tanks and constructed drainage fields are viable options for efficient sewage treatment.

When the amount of sewage that needs to be treated goes up, the drainage field must also increase in size. This requires enough land with proper porosity to be available, or else the installation will become very costly.

In cases where the land is insufficient or unsuitable, a package sewage treatment plant is recommended due to needing a smaller drainage field or by discharging it to a nearby watercourse, if available.

Interceptors and Seporators

Oil/water interceptors, or separators, are installed as part of surface water drainage systems where there is a possibility that “hydrocarbons” – oil, diesel, petrol, grease, etc. – could cause pollution. They separate the polluting hydrocarbons from the surface water and retain the oil within the separator until it is removed and taken away by a registered waste carrier for treatment and recycling at a specialist site. They also serve as a crucial first line of defense in case of a chemical spill, effectively preventing environmental contamination.

They are most commonly found under car parks, alongside motorways, and in industrial situations such as breakers’ yards. Wash-down separators separate grit and aggregates from water in quarries and on construction sites. Forecourt separators are designed to contain spillages from fuel delivery vehicles. To be effective, all separators need to be correctly designed, installed, and maintained as per specific site requirements.

Grease Management

We offer a range of products that focus on commercial grease management. To find out more information please see below.

EPAS - GreaseShield

After extensive research and product testing, we ultimately selected the GreaseShield as the most efficient and cost-effective grease removal unit (GRU).

GreseSheild systems captures waste thermal energy from commercial kitchen effluent in real-time to extract emulsified FOGs, particularly saturated animal fats, before they solidify. It features an integrated Pre Filter and an optional Automatic Solids Removal system, which efficiently removes organic solids and prevents anaerobic odorous states caused by biological processes. This preserves effluent oxygen levels and leads to significant reductions in BOD, COD, FOG, and SS loadings by effectively preventing the degradation of biological organic matter in water.

This unit is designed to fit beneath a single or double sink used for washing pots. It does require regular maintenance from kitchen staff, but this maintenance is crucial to its effectiveness. The front of the unit features a transparent container that visibly collects fats, oils, and grease (FOG). If this container is not regularly emptied, it will overflow and cannot be ignored.

Trapzilla

Another option for handling kitchen wastewater is to install an external, underground grease interceptor. This option requires sufficient space and access to tap into the wastewater line before other drains.

Traditional interceptors were simple tanks with baffles, but a more effective alternative we supply is the “Trapzilla”, which is significantly better at protecting downstream sewage treatment plants and pump stations. The number of interceptors needed and whether an upstream silt trap is necessary depends on the specific situation and would need to be evaluated. Installing an interceptor does involve some disruption to the property’s exterior, and they must be emptied by an external contractor using a vacuum tanker.

While a standard interceptor may be cheaper, it won’t be as effective as the “Trapzilla” in protecting downstream assets, which is our primary concern.
