Design, Installation & Maintenance

We have successfully installed off-mains solutions at all locations, ranging from a single household’s septic tank to a sewage treatment plant that caters to 5000 people. We only use fully-employed, dedicated in-house teams in order to ensure the highest level of control and quality.

Experience you can trust!

When gravity flow is not possible, pump stations are used to transport raw sewage, treated effluent, and sometimes surface water from one location to another. Some examples of use cases:

  • Moving raw sewage from a property to an uphill or distant main sewer.
  • Moving treated effluent from a septic tank to a remote or distant drainage field.
  • Moving treated effluent from a package sewage treatment plant to a remote discharge point on a stream or river.

A package pump station contains a pre-made vessel typically constructed from GRP, MDPE, or HDPE. It comes equipped with rails for the pumps to slide up and down, feet for the pump to sit on, internal pipework, control floats, and one or two pumps. The reason it is called a “package” pump station is that all of these components, with the exception of the pumps themselves, are pre-installed at the factory. When the pump station arrives on site, the pumps are then lowered into place. The number of pumps included in the vessel depends on what needs to be pumped, the distance and height of the pumping, the level of backup service available, and the potential consequences of pump failure. Unfortunately, these important factors are often overlooked in favour of budget considerations. However, saving money on pumping primary treated effluent and raw sewage can often prove to be a costly mistake in the long run.

If you own or operate a site, it’s essential to be part of the process when choosing a pump station. This way, you can avoid any negative impact on your operations in case of a breakdown. Don’t rely solely on your contractor, builder, or architect to choose a pump station based on its price without your input. If you do, they won’t be there to help you when you’re waist-deep in trouble!

Our business began with land drainage pipe installations and has evolved into complete design and project management of wastewater treatment solutions. Now, we are acknowledged experts in the sector. Whether it’s a straightforward septic tank and drainage field for a small cottage or a sophisticated package sewage treatment plant for a large luxury hotel discharging into a salmon river, our focus and purpose remain clear:

  • To take full ownership and responsibility for ensuring the correct installation of all supplied finished products.
  • To take ownership of and responsibility for the correct construction of bespoke, site-built items and services

We guarantee that all work will be completed as per the agreed specifications, standards, timescales, and costs, while strictly adhering to health and safety procedures throughout the entire process.

It’s no surprise that the proper installation of any tank in the ground guards it against the impact of ground movement and changes in water levels,  extending its lifespan significantly. Likewise, the correct installation of a tank for biological sewage treatment optimizes and enhances the efficiency of these essential processes.

Tanks installed incorrectly can disrupt the carefully designed flow routes crucial for thorough treatment. Poor ventilation not only goes against regulations but also causes unpleasant odours and nuisance. Additionally, tanks installed too deep face structural strain and become challenging to service, potentially requiring two people for safety reasons and increasing servicing costs.

Continuing on the same note, while modern machinery makes deeper digs relatively quick, it generates more spoil for disposal. Additionally, deeper installations necessitate more concrete for backfill. Furthermore, deeper plants with air pumps might require more power to function, potentially leading to shorter pump lifespans. All of these factors ultimately contribute to increased costs.

It is easy to understand why we emphasize the significance of good design right from the start…

Handling large and valuable plant pieces on-site requires a high level of skill and expertise. Even when installing a domestic septic tank on rough terrain, there are risks due to the machinery operating on uneven ground and the potential for falling into deep holes. As a result, effective site planning and management procedures are essential, along with skilled and qualified personnel. Our commitment to maintaining ISO9001-certified systems, procedures, and working practices, combined with multiple health and safety accreditations, ensures that we uphold these high standards on every site.

Implementing these safeguards not only ensures safety but also prevents complacency, leading to cost savings. Our familiarity with various manufacturers’ products enables us to conduct swift and cost-effective installations, reducing the risk of damage to GRP vessels. By employing risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work, we protect this advantage, effectively managing risks and minimizing downtime.

With over 50 years of experience, we have honed our skills and now excel in our field. Our practical expertise, supported by independently certified systems, ensures you receive the installation service you need. Rest assured, our reliable service provides you with peace of mind and confidence, freeing you to focus on other aspects of your development, day-to-day business, or personal life.

More Info: Off-Mains Drainage Experts You Can Trust

We have since 1973 installed and maintained wastewater treatment systems for XX homeowners and business owners. We have built relationships with a range of manufactures and gained technical understanding of their different products.

Our unique body of experience and knowledge of different wastewater treatment systems sets us apart from our competitors. We can offer you a range of options tailored to your needs from a range of leading suppliers.

Our fully qualified engineers have technical understanding of how each system work – but also how each system would fit into the environment at your site. There is no standardised approach, we draw on our expertise to install sewage treatment plants or septic tanks that will run efficiently for years to come.

At Hutchinson we believe in honesty and transparency. Our aim is to work alongside you to understand your priorities, needs and budget. We believe that it is important to invest time and effort in the design, so that you get a solution that work best for you. Together we will discuss matters such as:

  • the current and future intended use of the property
  • the current size of the property and any future development that may be envisaged
  • your preferred location for the installation
  • the best location for the installation bearing in mind how you may wish to use the site in the future, site levels and gravity flows, natural features, and man-made structures
  • the sensitivity of the environment into which you will be held responsible for discharging your treated effluent: over a certain size of discharge, a treated effluent quality stand will be specified and imposed through testing

Sometimes a site investigation is necessary before some options can be ruled in or out.

Our experienced team will guide you through the process and explain the implications of your priorities and choices. We are always on hand to answer any questions you might have about wastewater treatment, the right system for you, or anything else you might have on your mind.

Legislation and compliance are complicated, but with more than 40 years’ experience in the wastewater industry we have been there as new laws and standards have been developed. As members of British Water, we not only work to the latest industry’s relevant Codes of Practice, but we also help develop and encourage best practice in the industry.

You can rest assured that the latest environmental and construction regulations in Scotland, England, and Wales will be followed rigorously. We always make sure our solutions meet the necessary Building Standards and Building Regulations. We will also help you apply for any required permits or licenses from the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, or SEPA.

Following our design consultation, we will offer you a well-reasoned recommendation that delivers the best value for you.

Hutchinson, is unlike many of our competitors, not commercially allied with one single manufacturer. We offer whole-of-market choices making us able to supply the right system for you and your needs.

We have our preferred suppliers based on our experiences of a product’s capabilities and performance and its manufacturer’s levels of service.

Our goal with any installation is to ensure that any solution we propose achieves the purpose it is there to fulfil and that it does so within an agreed brief.

Installing sewage systems is complex process. There are many things that needs to be considered before installing a plant, tank, or pump, for example to ground movement and rising and falling water. Furthermore, there are risk associated with installations like damaging the expensive sewage system while manoeuvring or people’s health & safety.

Over the years our engineers have developed thorough installation processes and procedures, demonstrated through our ISO9001 Accreditation. We have numerous safeguarding procedures to keep everyone on site safe, while at the same time protecting the integrity of the plant, tank, or pump.

You can trust Hutchinson to take ownership of and responsibility for the correct installation of supplied finished products and the correct construction of bespoke, site-built items and services.
